What is path and how to set it?

Path variable indicate the location where require binary executable are present.

If we didn't set the path variable then java and javac command will not work.

So that we need to set the path for executable file to access anywhere withing the operating system drives and folder.

To to set the path:

There are two ways to set the path--

1. Temporarily through command prompt 

  • Open command prompt 

  • set path =%path%;C:\Program Files\java\jdk1.5.0.17\bin;

2. Permanently through system environment variable

  • Right click on Computer and select property

  • Click on Advance tab

  • Click on Environment Variable button

  • Click on new button under user variable

    • Variable Name: path

    • Variable Value: %path%;C:\Program Files\java\jdk1.5.0.17\bin

  •  Click on Ok button on environment variable window and all Ok window

 Path sets for binary folder where .exe files is available.
